Manchin’s tax proposal: a reason to vote Republican

Its not looking good for Democrat candidates across the state so Governor Joe Manchin is trying a new tactic: campaigning on the taxpayers dime.

After releasing his plan to reduce some taxes while increasing others, Manchin will go across the state selling his plan. Of course the local Democrat candidates will magically show up as well with sycophantic words of approval. While Manchin may make feeble attempts to claim that everything is on the up-and-up, it doesnt take a tax expert to know that all Manchins stump speeches will end with, and if you elect my team, well get this legislation passed.

You really have to wonder if anything is below this man.

And what of the legislation? While Manchin touts it as a tax overhaul, with only a 0.0015% reduction in the business franchise tax, a 1-penny reduction in certain food taxes and increase in other taxes, it is miserly at best.

The proposal also raises the state income tax exemption to meet federal poverty rates. I remember helping Senator Steve Harrison (R-Kanawha) draft that legislation four years ago when I was his aide. Of course, the Democrats killed the bill but now theyll be giggling with glee to pass it.

But the proposal is not just about tax cuts; get ready for the price of gas and food to go up.

Gasoline will go up 5-cents and wholesale gas taxes will raise; something businesses will pass on to you and me.

Daddy Manchin has noticed you are too fat and too unhealthy. Under the guised of taking care of you, he wants to raise the taxes on cigarettes and snack foods to penalize you for making bad choices so he can get more of your money. Whats next? Is he going to tax vehicles with poor crash ratings, fine us for running with scissors or make us do community labor for going outside without our galoshes?

The purpose of government is not to micromanage your life. But that is exactly what Democrats believe they are on this earth to do.

The purpose of government is not to increase ad infinitum. But with one of the largest governments in the union, that is exactly what Democrats have created.

The citizens of West Virginia need to go to the polls asking one question: does the candidate support Manchins tax proposal? If so, they need to make sure the candidate never get the chance to vote for it.

Very well put! I don’t need them running my life. I do just fine without them. As Mad Max on the John Boy & Bill Show says… “Stop ruinin’ my life!”

I do not need a democrat from the pervered liberal left trying to dictate what is best for me.West Virginia needs creative thinking in generating new revenue for this state not a token tax cut here or there and an increase here or there. I moved out of Pennsylvania because of the tax structure in my county and will relocate again if this administration chooses to raise taxes on food and gasolinE.

West Virginians need to wake up and vote out lame brains that are up for re-election who can not and will not stand up for for the electorate. I will not vote for “big daddy” byrd because he aligns too closely with the really perverted wing of the democratic party with the likes of kerry, kennedy, clinton etc.. I will not vote for mollahand because I think he will be too distracted with criminal investigations plus he has integrity and honesty issues - like most politicians i guess.
will the real leaders of this state please stand up!if you are out to pad your egos or line your pockets with wealth at our expense please take a seat. I want real thinkers and doers to run and represent our state. i am tried of the same old brand and ready to try a new one.

This is just another tactics used by Manchin to get the same good-ole boys back in office. Guess what? It won’t work this time. The public has already been there and done that for more years than I care to count and nothing has been done for WV yet. I can just hear these left-wing liberal now, telling Joe you got to do something we might lose this time. Well Joe I guess these so called hillbillies are better educated than you imagined. We are too smart to fall for that stupid trick. Oh, and by the way when you are spending time with the miners families that have been killed, what about all these four-wheelers death this year. Hardly a word mentioned. Have you spent any time with their families? The miners had to be there to earn a living but your legislature didn’t bother to pass laws to slow this down. I believe the count is 49 deaths this year. Oh well the four-wheelers are bringing business to the state and to you and yours that’s what count. No Joe your people won’t get my vote. I tird of being fed crap and kept in the dark. Your little games don’t work.

I wore galoshes as a child and ate goulashes when Mom cooked Hungarian. Otherwise, a great column. Loved Jo’s comment -she gave the definition of a mushroom, which Mojo obviously thinks we all are.

I am not a very political person but my life was very happy and fine. Our community used to be a very quiet and happy place. If a stranger came everyone would call and warn everyone if there was an odd car or stranger walking which rarely ever happened. Everyone new everyone and everybody was happy. Until a few people from out of state spreaded the word about fourwheeler trails and riding up there. Then the state stepped in and provided more trails and fixed the laws to were the fourwheelers have more privaleges then the people who pay taxes to the state and work in the state and spend money in the state. Most of the people coming in riding four wheelers are from out of state and spend little money in the state. You have to think if the constant aggravation and hurrasment and litter is worth a few extra dollars. If the governor wants to help the state he should inforce four wheeler laws more strictley and make new more effective laws.
