Democrats forget Logan Goodall

The Governor and Senate Democrats finally allowed the “Child Protection Act of 2006” to pass. Child Protection Act of 2006 kind of rolls right off your tongue right? While the content of the bill is laudable, the title illustrates the intense pride of the Governor and the Democrat legislators.

Senator Sprouse attempted to amend the bill in the Senate Finance committee and add the words “also known as ‘Logan’s Law’” behind the title. Sprouse remarked that it would not affect the official title and “would give a little bit of recognition to the family who got us to this point.”

Senator Plymale (D-Wayne) quickly spoke against the amendment, saying this is a “serious bill” and he does not want to give the family a chance to use this legislation for “publicity.” Being the sycophant that he is, Plymale then praised Senator Kessler (he was the one that killed the bill in the first place during the regular session) and the Governor for all their “hard work” in making the bill happen.

Plymale did not elaborate on what sort of recognition the family could exploit from having the words inserted. The truth is there was a direct order from Manchin and the legislative leadership that the words “Logan’s Law” were not to be included in the bill. Why? During the 2006 regular legislative session, it was the Republicans who rallied behind Logan’s family and supported their bill over the Governor’s pathetically weak one. Once the session was over, it was the Republicans who fought to keep key provisions in Logan’s law in the compromise bill. In supporting a family who only wanted to protect children, the Republicans unintentionally linked themselves to the name of Logan Goodall. Thus, recognizing Logan or any member in his family (like legislatures in other states have done for their sex predator victims) would be admitting the Republicans were right and the Democrats could have none of that.

The Democratic Finance committee members, of course, defeated Sprouse’s amendment and they summarily forgot Logan Goodall.

Oh well, that is the Democrat’s way. This is not the first time they have plagiarized ideas and acted like it was their own. But as long as the Democrats keep stealing Republican ideas and then passing them, this state will begin to improve.

On a side note, if Logan’s Law had passed in the regular legislative session, it would have taken affect 5 days ago on June 11th. But because of the Democrat’s delay, Logan’s Law The “Child Protection Act of 2006” will now go into affect on October 1st. Let us hope our children can hang on until then.

Where do they think the phrase “Amber Alert” came from!?

It’s long over-due to vote the bums out… now’s the time to do so.

Are you kidding? Republicans do very little at the WV Legislature except mouth off. With the few exceptions of those Republicans who work with and respect with the Dems, Republicans in state government are worthless.
I hope all the “Cindy Frichs” get voted out this November. Leave the Legislature in the hands of good Democrats and take all the drama out of our state politics.

In response to Jess the Republicans have a lot of ideas, they don’t get passed because the Dems hold them up. Ex: Republicans want to eliminate the food tax(by the way what happened to the 1% tax the Gov was to take off this year(1% sales tax each yr), but Dems won’t even let it be discussed.
Also Dems have had control(and still do)of the Legislature for 70 yrs and look at the shape were in. GOD BLESS BUDDY

Jess obviously shows he knows VERY LITTLE about the WV legislature if he doesnt see what is happening.

by “work with” the dems, he means to vote for higher taxes, more welfare, fewer jobs, more food stamps, clothing vouchers, ETC, basically more rewarding of laziness and less benefit from very hard work. jess,,,YOUR PARTY has driven this state in the ditch! we are dead last in income and 6th highest in taxes, and we have a spiraling out of control TRS [thats teachers retirement system there jess] that is absolutely draining every bit of coal surplus we are making. hey jess, i want you to stop and think a few seconds……and ask yourself, what is WV going to do if the price of coal falls, and we have to come up with 300 and 400 million more a year for the TRS? and in 15 years or so it tops 1 BILLION!

whay is JESS’s party afraid to fix the TRS? all they do is pour money down this rat hole but run from the problem. they are more worried about what a bill is called that fixing the biggest problem our state has EVER FACED!

so, jess, come first of the month, go cash your check, enjoy your food stamp card, and the rest of us will keep going to work, and earning the 50th place wages!

I am a transplant to Charlotte, NC from my beloved WV. I, however, will never forget about my home. The article concerning Logan’s Law does not surprise me in the least. Politics as usual in our capital. The really sad thing that bothers me is the lack of knowledge about our representatives in our state or across the country for that matter. I follow federal politics everyday and I do not follow state to any degree. To comment or take jabs at our state representatives would be wrong and just plain BS since I don’t know enough about the issues.

Our Federal representatives, on the other hand, nauseate me. Sen. Rockefeller, I wish I could tell everyone how proud I was when you personally told me that you encourage all young people to move out of the state when I asked you why most college graduates have to move out of state to find promising careers… (What?). Rep. Mollohan, way to make us proud this past year. Senator Byrd, nothing is more disappointing than watching you being escorted around the Senate floor as if you are a God, then watching you read your incoherent rambling written in 108 pt font from the gallery. Yes, our wonderful former KKK, anti-Iraq War, pork belly pig really can’t read normal font. One word… retire.

Before I get too upset, I just want to throw it out there and say it; Senator Byrd, you are a disgrace. You humiliate me and our wonderful state. If you would give a portion of the energy towards economic development that you do towards cementing your legacy by plastering your name on every school, road, bridge and public or private building that exists within our state lines, we may be able to move into the 21st century.

My point to all my rambling is that our voters need to get past the stigma that Dems are on their side and Republicans want to start wars, ruin the environment and favor a non-existent group of society called “the rich”. The rich, as I believe, are the ones who have worked hard to get there, were poor earlier in life and now pay all the taxes. Are we to believe that we, as Americans, are to encourage the American Dream but disdain those who achieve it?

West Virginians, it is way past time to keep hurting yourselves. Let your representatives know that you read the news. Let them know with your vote. We can all read about the day to day rhetoric of our government, but remember that we are the ones that put them there. We are the ones, the only ones, who can take them out.

Sincerely,
Derek

Does that mean we can rename all the state infrastructure named for Byrd?

what does politics have to do with child abuse? i’m ashamed of all of you that even had to think about logans law. he was a 2 year old child we all let him down. the system is not designed to help the children. WE SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED.. TO EVERYONE IN THE SENATE GOD FORBID ANY OF YOUR CHILDREN, OR FAMILY MEMBERS GET ABUSED BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO THINK OF WHAT EXCUSE YOU WILL TELL THEM AS TO WHY YOU DID NOTHING TO PROVENT IT WHEN YOU ALL HAD THE CHANCE… YOU SHAME YOURSELVES…. WHY HAVE A POSITION TO CHANGES THINGS AND DO NOTHING WHEN IT’S IMPORTANT… I PRAY YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK INTO THE EYES IF A CHILD AND EXPLAIN…
