Interesting read there…. I find his argument that he is using the fact that the fellow is a republican as being justification for him keeping his contributions. For his argument to hold any water, he shouldn’t have accepted them in the first place.
While I think that the gesture of giving the funds to a charity is nice and all, I really fail to see how it accomplishes much of anything. It’s all a matter of show. The money that was given has already been used by the campaigns. The money they give to the charities is just that — money donated to the charities, and I would imagine that each of them will claim a deduction on their tax return.
You’re right, Stacey. Returning the money is a hollow gesture. I guess the recipients see it as “blood-money” of sorts and are returning it for appearance’s sake.
I personally do not care what they do with it, but I do take offense when Harry Reid talks about Republican corruption when he accepted money from Abramoff.
Good point about the tax deduction from donating to charities.
