Jul31

Would you like to own this book? You can win it if you are subscribed by email to williamstewart.org. Each time I write a review of a book, I will have a random drawing from my email subscription list soon after. One lucky person will get the book absolutely free. I even pay for shipping.

This brand new book is special: it is autographed by Brad Crouser and Arch Moore.

If you are not subscribed yet, do so now. The drawing for this book will be held Friday, 4 August 2006.

Ever since I sat across a rickety lunch table in Charleston and heard Brad Crouser tell stories from the Arch Moore years, I have looked forward to his book on West Virginia’s most colorful politician. That was over a year ago. Today “Arch: the Life of Governor Arch Moore, Jr.” is available to everyone.

How Doug McKinney will succeed as chairman

Jul30

Our new Republican Party Chairman, Doug McKinney, is a capable man. I think he can lead us in the right direction and raise money; most importantly Doug McKinney knows he can.

But the best of intentions on his part will not save him from inevitable failure if he does not get the support of all the Republicans. Yes, he won and it was a decisive victory, but that will not keep the naysayers from doubting his every move. Don’t look so innocent. You know we all do it sometime.

Results of the West Virginia Republican meeting

Jul29

I’m trying something new. This post will be updated throughout the day with additional news on the West Virginia Republican Party’s meeting and the results of the election for party chairman.

Pardon the misspellings or bad grammar. There’s not much time to write and I am in a hurry.

If this really is a party, why am I not having fun?

Congratulations to the dividers, the contentious, the cannibals of the Republican Party. You know who you are. You have effectively waged war on the race for Chairman and have given the Democrats enough ammo for the election.

How? Politics as usual: lies, rumors, half-truths, and whispers. It is a well-worn arsenal that has worked in the past and is not failing now. You have effectively gotten the Republicans to shoot at their brethren in the trenches. Why must there be an enemy? We have our fellow Republicans and ammo aplenty.

Doug McKinney’s money speaks

Jul26

I appreciate Mark Scott and Doug McKinney participating in the questionnaires. I enjoyed reading them. Judging from the number of visitors to each post, you did as well.

Given the wealth of talent in each man, we are a winner no matter who gets the nomination, but only one can win. The equality between the men makes the little things significant in making the decision.

One fact is indisputable: Doug McKinney gave thousands of dollars to Democrat candidates running against Republicans between 1998 and 2002.

Meet Mark Scott, candidate for Republican Chairman

Jul24

Republicans will be electing a new party chairman when they meet on July 28th and 29th. So far, our candidates are Douglas McKinney and Mark Scott.

In order for us to know them better, I sent them both an almost identical questionnaire. Reading their answers in their own words is the best way I know how, short of spending of a face-to-face meeting.

This is the questionnaire for Mark Scott.

Just say no

Charleston residents will vote today on Charleston’s worker tax — A.K.A “user fee.” Those who frequent this site know my position on the subject quite well. I will not waste your time with another lengthy, impassioned plea, but I do have one more thing to say.

What’s good for the goose…

Jul17

The liberal Charleston Gazette has come out against Congress giving the power of the line-item veto to President George Bush. According to the Gazette, the ability of the President to “veto any line in any budget or spending bill passed by Congress” is “too much control” for a “power-hungry White House.”

The 3 million dollar knee

Jul14

Governor Joe Manchin’s renovation of the Governor’s mansion, with a $1,123 shower head, $41,000 marble bathtubs and 12 state-of-the-art flat panel televisions, has been nothing more than a lesson in excess. As the necessary renovations gave way to gratuitous and excessive additions, most legislators (Democrat and Republican) and all Joe-lovers everywhere have stood by and let it happen (Hoppy Kercheval excepted).
