I just returned from the rally where Senator Robert Byrd formally announced he will run again. It was a well organized event with over 100 people in attendance. The most striking thing to me was his frailty: Senator Byrd had to have assistance to get up and down the stairs (only two steps) and he used a cane. He was very unsteady on his feet and his skin was very pale.

Governor Manchin addressed the audience first. After him, two individuals who benefitted from a subsidy of Senator Byrd’s spoke, then General Allen Tackett of the 130th Airlift Wing introduced Senator Byrd. Senator Byrd’s speech lasted approximately 25 minutes (rough estimate).
