Generally wrong
The Democrats are adamantly defending General Tackett’s overt support for Senator Byrd and the Democratic Party. The General has attended numerous functions with Senator Byrd and was a speaker at the Democrat’s summer meeting. He attended all these events in uniform.
A constituent recently emailed Senator Sprouse saying he is almost certain General Tackett is wrong.
According to D.O.D. Directive 1344.10:
4.1.2. A member on active duty shall not:
4.1.2.1. Use his or her official authority or influence for interfering with an election; affecting the course or outcome of an election; soliciting votes for a particular candidate or issue; or requiring or soliciting political contributions from others.
4.1.2.3. Participate in partisan political management, campaigns, or conventions (unless attending a convention as a spectator when not in uniform).
Paragraph 5, of the same directive, requires the National Guard Bureau to issue a similar directive to their members:
5.3. The Chief, National Guard Bureau shall issue policy guidance similar to that included in this Directive that is applicable to members of the National Guard serving in a full-time National Guard duty status.
As the constituent points out, Tackett is “carrying a DOD Flag Officer ID card and is on active duty full time. Additionally, the uniform he is wearing is not a WV uniform, regardless of who/whom is signing his paycheck. It is the uniform of the U.S. Army. New legislation is probably not required. All that is required is that the Guard abide by existing DOD directives.”
At the bottom of the email he interjects an interesting aside: “I am a retired Naval Officer and happen to support Senator Byrd in his current campaign but I don’t condone breaking the regulations by a Military Officer regardless of whom he’s supporting.”
Forging Santa
Gary Abernathy is trying to drum up his book sales with a wretched picture of Santa. Come on, people! Buy his book so he’ll take that abhorrence off his site.
The Drooling Senator
A personal friend of Senator Byrd remarked to me that no one has the right to say Senator Byrd is too old for Congress. He said that the only person who can determine he is too old is Senator Byrd. While the body may break down, he explained, Senator Byrd’s mind is still as sharp as ever.
For the sake of argument, I’ll concede the point that Senator Byrd is “brilliant” as his sycophants opine, but his brain does West Virginia no good while he catches a quick nap on his Senate desk.
Because Senator Byrd represents the people of West Virginia, the voters have every right to determine if he is fit for the job. Is he mentally fit? We can debate that from now to the election. Is he physically fit? I’ll let Senator Byrd answer that question himself. Wait, he can’t: he’s asleep.
Houston you got a honkin’ big problem
I must say I was bitterly disappointed in the Houston Astros’ loss. I only watch baseball during the World Series, so I naturally wanted it to continue.
Whenever two teams play and I do not care about either, I stick to my southern heritage and root for the geographically southernmost team. Oddly enough, I make an exception for the Yankees. Go figure.
A split in the Kessler house?
Senator Kessler had an interesting confession to me during the September interims: he said his wife voted for “that #$&% Bush.” I didn’t ask, but I have a feeling Senator Kessler voted for Kerry.
Take two
Now that Miers is gone, who is next to run the gauntlet? A lawyer buddy of mine wants J. Michael Luttig.
According to Fox News, Luttig worked in the Justice Department during the administration of the first President Bush and is serving on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va. He was a law clerk to the late Chief Justice Warren Burger from 1983-84.
Luttig is a die-hard, unapologetic conservative with an impeccable record. His nomination would be an uphill battle, but the fight is worth it.
Bruce Fein, former Deputy Attorney General during the Reagan administration, says Luttig “is a man who is not tortured by doubt over the correctness of his judicial philosophy.”

William-
Yes, Gen. Tackett shouldn’t be wearing his uniform while parading around w/Byrd.
Just wonder if Hiram is allowed to parade around his record on the Guard while campaigning for US Senate… HAHA
Kydem, from my experiences with him, is no liberal. He is most definitely a moderate.
William,
This is a quite a telling quote about our Socialist Friends at Modern America:
“This blog isn’t about intellectual topics on how to improve the life of everyday Americans and West Virginians.”
…In other words, they don’t want to talk about how to reverse the 80+ percent population loss in McDowell County or how to dig our beloved state out of the hole it was put in by the Ruling Party and their 75 plus year iron grip on our state.
…By their own admission they are propogandists. Their party rules our state, their party has authored every law and budget in ALL of our lifetimes (everyone under 80). They cannot defend what they have done to our state, they can only attack FoxNews and Rush (evidence that the Charleston Gazette, CNN, and New York Times are ancient dinosaurs of a era long past)
…Since the Democrats OWN the West Virginia they have created, their only defense is to the WVGOP is to alledge that the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency will enslave all the working men and let everyone starve if we ever pry the gavels from Earl Ray and Kiss.
…They will not tell everyone that most all of the thouands that have left the free state of McDowell have moved to Republican dominated states of North Carolina and Virginia (both of which are right to work).
Both states were in the economic toilet nationally until they started electing Republicans.
By their own admission, the children that run Modern America are not interested in reasonable political discourse. They are just trying to impress some local or state Democrat government official in hopes of becoming a government employee in a job where they are not actually expected to do anything productive.
…They impress no one. Jim Mullins has gotten more hits in three months working on a blog by his lonesome than their collabrative efforts have in well over a year.
…They realize that they are losing, that is why they can only characturize and insult. They know that their ruling party is out of ideas.
In other words, let them ramble on like the crazy aunt in the attic.
