Pyrrhic victory for the Democrats

Category

Topic

It is humorous how the Democrats are rejoicing over the victories in New Jersey’s and Virginia’s races for Governor. They bloviate how America has finally wised up to the Republicans and George Bush, but the fact is Democrats were already in control of the Governor’s office in both states.

Democrats are so desperate these days that no gain seems to them like a great victory.

No matter what the Democrat’s intone, Virginia is hardly a Republican stronghold. Of the last seven governors, five were Democratic.

Democrats fail to mention that while they retained the Governor’s seat in Virginia, Republicans won the Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General positions.

Not only did Democrats fail to gain seats, they completely lost the social war. Texans codified an amendment to their constitution banning same-sex marriage: 76% for and 24% against with 253 of 254 counties voting for. Ohio Republicans, despite a voter turnout just shy of 40%, soundly defeated four measures championed by the Democrats.

If this is a Democratic victory, I wish them more of the same.

“One more such victory and we are lost.”

– Pyrrhus

Once more you miss the point and leave out some “social” information.

First, the race in Virginia was extremely close. Perhaps more telling that a democrat won is that a visit by Bush at the 11th hour did nothing to help the republican contender. That’s where the real story is. Had the race gone republican it would have been touted as proof that Bush still had political clout. Oh, btw, did you hear of the Arizona candidate who told Bush please NOT to come campaign for him?

As to social issues: Perhaps you missed the California elections? All of Arnold’s proposals were shot down.

Looks like you misunderstood my article. The point was that the Democrats had no gain in Virginia and NJ, plus there were Republican gains in other parts of the country.

Don’t decieve yourself: had the Virginia race gone for the GOP, you would have never conceded that Bush had political clout.

A liberal state such as California voting against conservative issues is no gain by the Democrats. California is, and always will be, a liberal cesspool. With the exception of the Gipper, no Republican President will have a significant impact on California. You should know that, Sinihele.

While you yourself bloviate against Democrats, you might look up the definition of “pyrrhic” - hardly an adjective one would use to describe the VA and NJ races. Much like elections in your state of WV, wins don’t cost Dems much of anything ;-). The only republican governor in WV in 40 years was a crook, Archie (oops, forgot the one nostalgic second term of Cecil who was elected by Democrats but too moderate for fellow Republicans).

I was really hoping my fellow GW alum, Monty, would show better last year, even contributed to his campaign, but he got trounced… hardly a pyhrric victory for Dems there, either.

Nah, I didn’t miss your point. Your point was that Democrats were celebrating and shouldn’t be. You attributed the wins to the mostly democratic voting history of the states. You ignore the implications behind the apparent ineffectiveness of Bush’s visit.

As to California, they elected Arnold, a republican but have obviously lost faith in his ability to lead. That issue had nothing to do with Bush.
