Goodbye Charlie Trump, hello who?

House Minority Leader Charles Trump’s announcement that he will not run again is something of a surprise. He will certainly be missed.

Trump was known for acting deliberately. Seen as a liability to some, it was his greatest asset. His colleagues and critics alike knew when Trump spoke, he actually said something and when Trump acted, it was only after careful consideration.

His announcement will create a shockwave through the Republican House. Those who were seriously looking at running for Senate will now reconsider so that they can be Minority Leader. Because there are several qualified candidates for the position, the fight will be brutal. I only hope they keep the discussion within themselves. All it takes is one disgruntled member going public and the press will have front-page fodder for a week.

Who are some of the possible front-runners?

Tim Armstead has been around for many years and has a stellar record as a conservative. Like Trump, he is very careful about what he does and says and is certainly not a loose cannon. Well-liked by his fellow Republicans, he would be an excellent choice.

Craig Blair, who was reportedly planning to run against Senator Unger, has now decided to run for reelection. One has to wonder if Trump’s announcement has anything to do with his decision.

Larry Border is currently the House Minority Whip and is logically next in line.

Mitch Carmichael hails from Jackson County. Like Armstead he has experience, conservatism and popularity on his side.

Patrick Lane doubtless wants the position, but he also has an eye on the Senate. Chances are his colleagues would go with a member with more years under his belt.

John Overington, a brilliant member of Mensa, is one of the top three most conservative members in the House.

Kelli Sobonya is a staunch conservative and hard fighter. With several years of experience, she is well in the running.

Ron Walters is another heavyweight and fantastic individual. Republicans may not want to have two Minority Leaders from Kanawha County though.

All these Delegates would do a fantastic job. May the best man – or woman – win.

I think Del. Overington should get the spot.

My vote would go with Carmichael. He’s well spoken, down to earth, and wouldn’t let it go to his head like the rest.

Also Hiram Lewis thinks he would be a good candidate for this position, but only after he runs for President.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for stopping by. Don’t worry, Hiram will eventually run for every position in this state!

The caucus should choose someone who could easily fill the role of Speaker….Trump would have been a natural, as I think Mitch would be. The bonus for the party would be that Mitch is a little more partisan, and his personality and spokesmanship could truly help build the party–of course, that could also be a double-edged sword. I could most easily see Carmichael or Border filling Trump’s shoes.
